China's travel-app ecosystem is entirely self-contained. Rely on Google Maps, Uber, or a foreign card alone and you'll be lost. Set up Alipay, WeChat, DiDi, and Apple Maps (or a local map app) before you depart.

FAQ

Q. Does Google Maps work in China?

Only in a limited way. Location and search can be inaccurate or blocked, so we recommend Apple Maps or a local map app (Amap).

Q. Can I just bring a foreign card?

No. Foreign cards are declined in many places, so setting up Alipay/WeChat QR payments is effectively essential.

Q. Do I really need a local phone number?

It's not required, but it helps with some verifications and services. An eSIM plus your passport covers most cases.
